Peggy Voss taught piano in the front room of the same house for forty-one years. Somewhere around six hundred children learned their scales on that upright, and a good number of them came back as adults to introduce her to their own.
She was born in 1941, the youngest of four, and never lived more than nine miles from where she started. She married Tom in 1963. They had three children, and she went back to teaching eleven days after the last one was born because, as she put it, the Wednesday students had already paid.
She kept a garden that was frankly too big for her, sang alto in the choir for fifty years, and was a ferocious and slightly unscrupulous card player. She did not care for small talk. She would ask you what you were actually worried about, and then she would wait.
She died at home on the second of September, with her family around her, which is exactly how she had planned it.
Her children Anne, David and Ruth; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her sister Josephine; and a great many former students who counted her as family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tom, in 2014.
Peggy asked that any gifts go to the Riverside Community Music Fund, which pays for lessons and instruments for children whose families cannot.
Gifts can be left at the reception or sent to riversidemusicfund.example. The family is grateful either way, and equally grateful for none at all.
The church lot fills by 10:30. Overflow parking is at the school on Chapel Road, three minutes' walk.
